It will be a busy Victoria Day weekend for police officers [...]

It will be a busy Victoria Day weekend for police officers across the province, and in the Kingston area.

This weekend is seen as the kick-off to summer-driving season, and will mean an increase in traffic on highways, trails and waterways.

O.P.P. say they will not tolerate any unsafe driving habits including distracted, speeding and aggressive drivers.

Travellers to the U-S could encounter a 45-minutes wait at the border this long weekend, according to Canada Border Services Agency.

They are advising drivers to leave earlier than planned in order to avoid the rush on Monday, which they predict will be between 3 and 10 p-m.

Meantime, Fire officials are offering up a few tips to Kingstonians who plan to set off fireworks this Victoria Day weekend.

They’re reminding residents to check wind conditions before setting off fireworks, always have a supply of water nearby and never hold a lit firework in your hand.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is asking private companies for their input on expanding gambling across the province.

OLG has identified 29 “gaming zones” that cover every area of the province including Kingston, Frontenac County, Gananoque and Leeds and Grenville counties.

A casino in our region would have up to 600 slot machines.

Another zone pits Toronto and Mississauga waterfront locations against each other and against Markham just to the north.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan calls Toronto and Ottawa “huge under-serviced markets” and says people should not be in his words “forced to travel 20 or 30 kilometres to access gaming.”

Duncan admits admits a Toronto casino would negatively impact existing casinos in Niagara Falls and Rama near Orillia, but says OLG is confident the market can support them all.

He also says there is a possibility existing casinos in other areas will be closed or relocated.
