Last night, councillors unanimously approved a motion to rename the park Bert Meunier Common, after the city’s chief administrative officer.

The city also plans to install a plaque at the site with details about Meunier’s contributions to Kingston.

Yesterday, councillors voted against the proposed five-year agreement from SMG Canada, which included a new incentive program that was performance-based. The vote was 7-6.

Cann says SMG plans to submit another revamped contract proposal once the city puts the call out for RFPs.

Lanark County O.P.P. are appealing to the public for help in locating a 58-year-old man, who’s been missing since last Thursday.

Morris Ladouceur was last seen on Highway 29 heading towards Brockville.

He is described as 5’8″, 160 pounds with gray, thin hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a brown hawaiian-style shirt with a black jacket with a TDK logo on the back, jeans and brown loafers.

Police say he is known to hitch hike and carry a Bible.

O.P.P. is also asking for the public to keep observation for Morris Ladouceur along the 401 corridor from the Cornwall area and west towards the Belleville/Cobourg area.

Yesterday, a judge ruled to adjourn a hearing in the case saying the city had failed to disclose all of the evidence.

The city wants CN to restore the decaying heritage structure, which lost its roof in a fire in 1996.

Executive Director Sandy Singers says demand is up 10% this year over last year and the food bank needs to stock up in preparation for the summer.

Baby food and formula will be gratefully accepted also.

Tonight between 6 and 9 p.m., volunteers canvassers will be going door-to-door in Kingston hoping to collect 100,000 non-perishable food items. Homeowners are invited to hand their donations to identified canvassers at the door or to leave them bagged on the doorstep for pick-up.

Donations can also be dropped off weekdays at the Food Bank at 140 Hickson Ave. or at all major grocery retailers. Monetary donations can be made via the Food Ban’s website at www.kingstonfoodbank.net.

The highway was closed in both directions around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, after two tractor trailers collided head-on near the Marysville Road exit.

Napanee O.P.P. have identified the drivers as 50-year-old Christian Martin of Gomiquiere, Quebec and 65-year-old Thomas Avon of Hannon, Ontario.

Police say Martin was driving the eastbound tractor trailer that swerved into the median, entering the westbound lanes, then darted back into the median, only to collide head-on with Avon’s westbound transport.

One of the trailers involved was loaded with tire wear rubber.

Police are still trying to determine what led Martin to drive off the highway.

A post mortem is scheduled today in Kingston.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 401 remain closed between Deseronto Road and Highway 37 following a serious vehicle collision involving two tractor trailers.

Both transports caught fire near Shannonville Road exit just after 3:30 p.m.

O.P.P. confirm that both drivers of the tractor trailer have died. Their identities are not known.

Following a preliminary investigation, police say it appears that the one tractor trailer, being a full B-train, was travelling eastbound. For unknown reasons, the driver veered into the median, crossed over and went into the westbound traffic. The driver then veered back into the median, just as a westbound tractor trailer swerved towards the median in attempt to avoid it. They both struck head on, engulfing in flames immediately.

O.P.P.are on scene, and say one lane of eastbound 401 between Deseronto Road and Hwy 37 will reopen sometime overnight.

However, the 401 westbound lanes between Marysville Road and Shannonville Road remain closed and will not be reopened until the road surface is repaved.

An emergency detour is in place.

The issue concerns the outer train station on Montreal Street.

Lawyers for the city want the rail company to restore the decaying heritage structure, which lost its roof in a fire in 1996.

They will present the Jim Bennet Achievement Award to United Way KFL&A President and CEO Bhavana Varma and the Padre Laverty Award to Youth Diversion Program Executive Director Daren Dougal.

The Jim Bennett Achievement Award is presented annually to a Kingstonian for achievements in his/her career, sport, the arts, or volunteer endeavours. Bhavana is being honoured for her dedication, leadership, and outstanding community service.

While the recipient of the Padre Laverty Award is presented annually to a Kingstonian and Queen’s alumnus in recognition of his/her dedication and commitment to the betterment of both the Queen’s and the Kingston communities. Daren is being honoured for his continuing mentorship of at-risk youth through innovative programming and partnerships with Kingston and Queen’s organizations.

Tonight’s dinner and awards ceremony runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

Hwy 401 west from Division Street to Sydenham Road will be reduced to one lane starting at 6 p.m., while the westbound on-ramp at Montreal Street will be closed at 7 o’clock.

The lane will reopen at 7 tomorrow morning, and the on-ramp will open to traffic at 5 a.m.
