Blue-Green Algae Blooms in Lower Cataraqui River
The lower Cataraqui River is not a safe place for swimmers or pets, according the health unit.
Samples collected from the river show the blue-green algae is indeed toxic, as it contains high levels of microcystin.
Officials with KFL&A Public Health say the algae poses no threat to the city’s drinking water, however private wells are at risk.
If the toxic water is swallowed, it cause fever, vomiting and in some cases, death.
Experts say there is nothing they can do about the algae, as disinfectants and algaecides are ineffective against it.
Meantime, blue-green algae blooms, which can smell like freshing mowed grass or rotting garbage, have also been found in the Rideau water system near Joyceville Institution and the Upper Brewers locks.
