Drunk Driver Nabbed After Hitting Vehicles, Tree, Fence

Police say a drunk driver left behind a path of destruction in the Kingscourt neighbourhood last night.  It all began at around 10:45 pm when a vehicle kept going after hitting a pick-up truck and another vehicle , both parked on 3rd Avenue.  According to police the vehicle didn’t get very far down 3rd Avenue before hitting a tree, in front of a witness, who tried unsuccessfully to stop the man behind the wheel from driving off.  Within minutes a third parked vehicle was sideswiped, this time on Alfred Crescent, followed by a cedar fence.

A 55-year-old man, who had twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system, was arrested and is facing a number of charges.

Town Hall Meeting At RMC

There’s word a town hall meeting will take place at RMC this morning to discuss rumours of faculty layoffs.

Last week, it was reported that the Department of National Defence is looking to eliminate about a third of the faculty at RMC and two other Canadian military colleges. Jean-Marc Noel, a professor of physics and president of the Canadian Military Colleges Faculty Association, says he has been given a list of 68 faculty members that the Department of National Defence is looking to get rid of to cut costs. Of the 68, Noel says, a majority teach at the Kingston campus, the largest of the three military colleges.

Price Fixing Lawsuit Launched

A 55-million-dollar class-action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of the alleged victims of a gas price-fixing scheme five years ago here in eastern Ontario.

The suit stems from a Competition Bureau case that saw Canadian Tire and others plead guilty last month to colluding to fix the price of gas sold in Kingston and Brockville.

Competition Bureau investigators found that gas retailers, or their representatives, phoned each other and agreed on the price they would charge.

Pioneer Energy, Canadian Tire, and Mr. Gas pleaded guilty to price fixing between May and November 2007 and were fined a total of more than two-million dollars.

Hotel Dieu Honours Lions Club Donation

An examination and treatment area of the ophthalmology clinic at Hotel Dieu Hospital has been officially renamed the Lions Clubs International Foundation Ophthalmology Lane,  in recognition of the significant donation made by District A3 Lions Club members and matched through the service club’s foundation.

The naming recognition event took place yesterday with representatives from 10 area Lions Clubs in attendance. In all, 36 of the 48 clubs in the district contributed more than $194,000 to Kingston’s three hospitals. This includes a generous $75,000 grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation for an Optical Coherence Tomography unit at Hotel Dieu.

Off Duty Officer Nabs Stunt Driver

An 18 year old Perth Road man, with only a G2 driver’s licence, made the mistake of passing a Kingston Police Traffic officer who was on his way to work last week.

The officer, who was driving his own car southbound on Sydenham Road, was
passed by a Ford pick-up truck on a hill.  The officer followed the truck from approximately two kilometers north of Unity Road and then as it sped through a 60 kilometre zone in the Bur Brook Road area.  At that point the officer estimated the truck was going 100 kilmetres above the posted speed limit. The officer’s speedometer was later verified to be accurate by being tested with a radar device.

The officer was able to get the driver’s attention and stop the vehicle near Sydenham Rd and the 401. The driver’s excuse for his driving behaviour was that he was going to be late for work. The young man was arrested, transported to the police station and later released and charged with:

” Stunt Driving (driving in excess of 50 kph over the posted speed limit)
” Speeding (160 kph in a 60 kph zone)
” Careless Driving
” Driving Unsafe Vehicle

Under the stunt driving legislation the vehicle has been automatically impounded for
seven days and the accused’s driver’s licence is also suspended for the same amount of
time. The driver is responsible for the towing bill and impound fees.
