Public’s Help Being Sought In Identifying Two Robbers

Kingston Police is asking for the public’s help in identifying two male suspects who allegedly robbed an apartment tenant living at 37 Cassidy Street.

The incident took place on Saturday April 7th between 9:45 and 10:15 p.m.

The victim, was held captive while money, prescription narcotics and other items were stolen from the apartment.

Video surveillance footage of the two men entering the building’s front lobby and running out of a nearby stairwell can be viewed on the FLY FM Facebook page here

Two Correctional Officers Assaulted At Collins Bay

Collins Bay Institution continues to operate on a moderate routine following an inmate assault against two correctional officers on Friday afternoon.

The incident took place at 1:40 p.m. and the two officers were taken to hospital in stable condition as a result.

The O.P.P. Penitentiary Squad and Correctional Service Canada is investigating the incident.

Wild Fire In South Frontenac

Kingston fire fighters are still at the scene of a wild fire in South Frontenac Township that’s been underway since yesterday afternoon.

Kingston fire crews were called out near Devil Lake Road just before 3:00 p.m., and officials tell us there are five fire trucks working to contain the blaze at the moment.

Details on injuries or how the fire started, have not been released.

SLC Receives Top Marks

New data released indicates over 87% of St. Lawrence college students are able to find work within six months of graduation—a number that is well above the provincial rate of 83%.

“In today’s economy, the job market is competitive but individuals making the choice to earn a college education will experience far reaching benefits, including better employment prospects and higher earnings than individuals who do not have any post-secondary education,” said Chris Whitaker, President and CEO of St. Lawrence College. “We are committed to the success of our students, and the employment and satisfaction data of our graduates reflects this.”

The Key Performance Indicator data also found that more than 92% of employers were satisfied or very satisfied with the quality educational preparation of the SLC graduates they hired, and 81% of graduates were satisfied with their college education.

New(er) ‘The’ Tragically Hip Way Signs To Be Installed

City staff will be installing new ‘The Tragically Hip Way’ signs on the lower part of Barrack Street this morning.

Last night, city council approved a by-law change to add “The” to Tragically Hip Way signs in front of the KRC after noticing the word was left out of the original by-law.

Engineering and Traffic Division crews will be installing the signs starting at 11:00 a.m.

Utilities Kingston – New Preventative Plumbing Program

Utilities Kingston has a new program aimed at helping homeowners avoid basement flooding and sanitary sewer back-ups.

The Preventative Plumbing program, offers financial assistance to customers to help with costs associated with installing back-up prevention devices or sump pump systems in their homes.

Eligible work will be paid out to customers retroactive to January 10th, 2012 as long as receipts are provided.

Household Hazardous Waste Facility Opens For Season

The Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Lappan’s Lane will open for the season in Kingston today.

The facility will be open through until November from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m. each Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each Saturday.

Residents are reminded to never put hazardous material in with regular garbage or pour it down a drain or toilet. Store hazardous material in original containers in a cool, dry place safely away from food, children or pets until you can bring it to the Household Hazardous Waste facility.

Household waste considered hazardous includes: medications, pesticides, dry cell batteries, automotive batteries, solvents, pool chemicals, paint thinners, removers or strippers, paint, oven cleaners, bleach, drain cleaners, ammonia, oil, antifreeze, propane cylinders – and these empty containers: paint cans, pesticide/herbicide containers, fertilizer containers, anti-freeze containers, solvent containers, oil containers (to a maximum of 30 litres).

Look for warning labels and instructions on products and handle any potentially hazardous materials with care. Do not mix hazardous materials and, when possible, bring items in their original containers.

Easter Holiday Closures In Kingston

Easter Holiday To Affect City Services

Municipal Services Run On Holiday Schedule

Municipal services like Kingston Transit, Green Bin and garbage collection will be affected by the Easter holiday.

Kingston Transit: Bus service will not operate on Friday. Buses run on their regular service on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Green Bin, garbage and recycling: There is no collection on Friday or Monday. Friday’s material will be collected Saturday. Monday’s collection moves to Tuesday and for the rest of the week, collection occurs the day after regular day.

Kingston Area Recycling Centre: Closed Friday and Monday. Open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Administrative Offices (including Community and Family Services and Housing Departments on Montreal Street, Provincial Offences and Utilities Kingston): Closed Friday through Monday. In the event of a utility emergency, such as a gas smell or a water main break, call the Utilities Kingston 24-hour number at 613-546-1181.

Arenas: Closed Friday and Monday.

Libraries: All branches of the Kingston Frontenac Public Library will be closed Friday, Sunday and Monday.

Wally Elmer Neighbourhood Centre: Closed Friday and Monday.

INVISTA Centre (including the Fitness & Wellness Centre): Closed Friday and Monday. Open regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Outdoor Athletic Park: Open to scheduled users.

Artillery Park Fitness & Aquatics Centre: Closed Friday and Monday. Open regular hours on Saturday and Sunday.

Portsmouth Olympic Harbour: Closed Friday and Monday.

Grand Theatre Box Office: Open Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Sunday.

Oakwood Daycare: Closed Friday and Monday.

Off-And-On Closures Tonight On LaSalle Causeway

The Lasalle Causeway will be shut down at times tonight.

Starting at 7:00 p.m., the bridge will be reduced to one lane and will also be closed for a number of 10-minute periods to allow for materials to be removed.

Both lanes of the Causeway will be re-opened by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.

Search & Rescue Stations Open-Up In Kingston Area Today

Search and Rescue stations will open for the season today in Kingston Cobourg, Port Weller, Port Dover and Amherstburg, in an effort to reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities on area waterways.

The Coast Guard warns that despite the warm weather, water temperatures are still cold enough to cause hypothermia, within a short period of time.

The Canadian Coast Guard is responsible for providing maritime resources in support of Search and Rescue in areas of federal responsibility. On the Great Lakes, Canadian Coast Guard stations are seasonal, operating during the traditional recreational boating season from April through to December.

Kingston To Help With Northern Ontario Flood Evacuees

Kingston will be assisting Smiths Falls as it hosts evacuees dealing with rising flood waters in Northern Ontario.

Extensive flooding in the James Bay region of northern Ontario has prompted Emergency Management Ontario to request Smiths Falls to act as a host municipality to prepare for the evacuation of northern residents whose communities are threatened by flooding.

The operation is being coordinated by Emergency Management Ontario and the Ministry of Natural Resources, in collaboration with federal, provincial, municipal and First Nations officials.

Kingston’s lead emergency management official is already in Smiths Falls, where evacuees will begin arriving later today.

The mayor says other resources could be shared, including equipment, supplies and childare and recreational staff is necessary.

KCVI Robotics Team In Waterloo Today

The robotics team at KCVI is getting some world-class attention for engineering excellence.

From today until Saturday, the K-Botics team is competing at the Waterloo Regional event ahead of the FIRST Robotics World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri on April 25th.

It’s the second straight year the high school has made it into the competition, that’s designed at helping high school students discover the interests and rewards of engineering and science.

“We need to show kids that it’s more fun to design and create a video game than it is to play one.” Dean Kamen. Inventor, Founder of FIRST.
