Update on Highway 401 Closure in Napanee

A view of the tractor trailer fire on Hwy 401 eastbound at Marysville Road on May 15, 2012.

Both the eastbound and westbound lanes of Highway 401 remain closed between Deseronto Road and Highway 37 following a serious vehicle collision involving two tractor trailers.

Both transports caught fire near Shannonville Road exit just after 3:30 p.m.

O.P.P. confirm that both drivers of the tractor trailer have died. Their identities are not known.

Following a preliminary investigation, police say it appears that the one tractor trailer, being a full B-train, was travelling eastbound. For unknown reasons, the driver veered into the median, crossed over and went into the westbound traffic. The driver then veered back into the median, just as a westbound tractor trailer swerved towards the median in attempt to avoid it. They both struck head on, engulfing in flames immediately.

O.P.P.are on scene, and say one lane of eastbound 401 between Deseronto Road and Hwy 37 will reopen sometime overnight.

However, the 401 westbound lanes between Marysville Road and Shannonville Road remain closed and will not be reopened until the road surface is repaved.

An emergency detour is in place.

Vehicles parked at Cataraqui Centre this afternoon were visually inspected by Kingston Police.

Officers were checking to see if there were any valuables inside the cars and if the doors were locked. Today’s initiative was part of the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign.

Police say thefts from vehicles is a recurring issue and can be avoided, such as making sure your vehicle is fully locked and placing purchases and items of value in your trunk or out of sight. Even peripheral items like digital music player or GPS device cords and mounts are seen as an invitation to would-be-thieves that these electronics may be found in your vehicle

If a vehicle is visually deemed to be insecure or an invitation to thieves, police officers will leave a note on the windshield providing hints, tips and describing the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign.
