Impossible Question – Thursday, December 15th

Though its population is more than double that of the City of Kingston, it’s the largest town in Ontario.  What is it?

A:  Markham

The 2006 census lists Markham’s population at just over 260,000, making it the 7th-largest municipality in Ontario.

Impossible Question – Tuesday, December 6th

What is the smallest city in Ontario (population)?

A:  Dryden

According to the 2006 Canadian Census, Dryden’s population was 8,195, the smallest of any “city” in Ontario.

A community needs a population of 10,000 to become a city, though if their population drops below that number, they remain a city.

Vote Today

I don’t like being told what to do – most people don’t, so I’m not going to tell you to get out and vote in the Ontario provincial election.

I will urge you to vote though.  As I mentioned last week, I have voted in every election since I was eligible.  There’s something about taking advantage of the right we have as citizens in this great country that feels empowering.  You get your chance to have your say in who represents you in government.

Maybe you think one vote won’t matter.  And maybe it won’t.  But when thousands of people think the same way, it does matter.  A lot.  In the last Ontario election, only about 53% of eligible voters cast ballots.  Imagine how many results could have been different if the other 47% of the population had turned out to exercise their voting right.

Hey, it’s certainly your right to abstain.  But I do wish that more people would get engaged enough to get out and put their “X” on a ballot.  Then maybe we’d get a government that was more reflective of the people they’re supposed to be representing.

Impossible Question – Thursday, January 13th

What are the only two Canadian provinces where you can’t get a personalized (vanity) license plate?

A:  Quebec and Newfoundland

Ontario was the first to offer them in 1973, though you could only pick three letters followed by three numbers.  In 1983, it was changed so you could get any 6 characters on your plate (now up to 8 characters).

Impossible Question – Tuesday, September 28th

The three animals that appear on this are a moose, a deer and a black bear.  Appear on what?

A:  The Ontario Coat of Arms
