I have come to the end of my 10 week beginner Spanish course at the Kingston Language Institute.
Time flies when you’re having fun! My classmates were amazing and all had fun and interesting things to share with the class. There was never a night when we weren’t all busting a gut laughing at something! I will miss them all, but they better be prepared because if I see them out and about I WILL yell out ‘HOLA’!!!
A big thank you to my teacher Laura Badour. She is a wonderful woman who always encouraged us to read, practice speaking out loud, but most importantly that it is okay to make mistakes because it is how we learn. There was a very easy feeling in the classroom. I don’t mean the course material, but the atmosphere. I wasn’t afraid to make mistakes and if I did (believe me there were alot! The best was when I said I was pregnant instead of saying I was embarrassed) I didn’t shy away and not correct myself or not want to contribute for the rest of the class. Not only is Laura a great teacher, but I consider her a friend aswell.
I received a certificate of completion (with a big smile on my face) which I will hang on the wall but most importantly, I am proud of myself and the rest of my classmates for taking on this challenge.
Hasta Luego!
In an earlier blog I mentioned that my next challenge was going to be studying Spanish. Last night was my second class and so far so good! It’s amazing how much Spanish I actually knew and was able to translate, but didn’t realize it until my classes began. My teacher Laura is fantastic. She is very patient with us and always encourages us to speak in Spanish. Most importantly, she reminds us not be afraid to make mistakes. This is how we learn. This is exactly what I need, because when it was my turn to answer questions I understood everything she asked, but froze when it was my turn to respond due to fear.
During our break I sent a text in Spanish to a friend. I was so confident that what I wrote was correct buuuuuuuuuut turns out I was totally wrong. I meant to say ‘I am very hungry’ but instead said, I am many men! If you think that’s funny this one is ever better. I asked Laura how to say ‘I am embarassed’. I thought it was ‘estoy embarrasada’ (it sounds like it would be right wouldn’t it? – mind the spelling though). What I actually said was I’m pregnant. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?! I TOLD YOU IT WAS FUNNY!!!! Estoy embarazada means I’m pregnant in Spanish.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO MAKE MISTAKES….Yesterday I made few, but at least I learned something from them and that’s the most important lesson.
BTW – I’m NOT pregnant.
